I know that modern point of sale apps are better than my old system, but I don't have time to learn new POS software!

Don't Let a Legacy POS System Hold Back Your Restaurant

If you are still using an old point of sale based on Windows, you should know the risks you're putting yourself and your business in.

The high potential for data loss — The potential for data loss is high since traditional spinning hard drives are considered roughly disposable after a few years. On-site backups are a chore, and nightly data transfers have a probable rate of failure. When you lose sales history, it makes doing taxes and accounting very difficult. Mistakes can be expensive.

"Going down" means you're out for the count — Windows-based legacy POS systems also leave restaurants in the lurches. If the server goes down, you're screwed until they can deliver a new box to your restaurant. If you're paying for 24-hour service to replace broken POS equipment you're looking at thousands of dollars for a service contract. Legacy POS systems also have no way of dealing with the internet going down. You're stuck without the ability to run credit cards, or you have to drag out the old knuckle-buster.

PCI and fraud prevention — Storing customer payment data on-site opens you up to severe obligations under the PCI DSS. What worse is that storing that data on a Windows computer leaves it vulnerable to a number of hacks. Legacy POS systems run on older versions of Windows and are rarely updated. The number of security exploits is staggering. This is not hypothetical if there is a data breach and the investigation points back to your restaurant as the cause you can be fined by PCI. Also, you'll have to spend significant money to maintain PCI compliance in the future. Failure to do so means you can't take credit cards anymore. That's the kind of loss of revenue that could see you closing the doors for good.

Bulky and not wireless — Legacy Windows POS systems are heavy, require a lot of power and are not mobile. Do you want to drag a PC around your restaurant to try to do table-side ordering with an old Legacy terminal? Customers these days are becoming more and more used to tableside payment and ordering. It's an expedient way to move guests through the dining experience without them feeling rushed. But if you don't have a mobile POS system, you're out of luck.

Android Tablet Point of Sale

If you use an Android POS, you may not be aware of just how much this choice can negatively affect the day to day of your restaurant business.

Android tablets are terrible on security — Even worse than Windows. Androids have over a thousand known security issues that can be exploited by hackers. This opens you up to liability if it's found that your restaurant is responsible for a breach of credit card data. Fines from PCI can be tens of thousands of dollars in some cases.

Android POS systems depend on second-rate hardware — I don't think you're planning on replacing your point of sale hardware before you've seen a significant return on investment. An expensive and time-consuming equipment refresh every couple of years should be expected with an Android POS system because most Android tablets are not built for long-life and durability.

Android apps are not well vetted — Unlike the Apple App Store, Google is not very vigilant about what is allowed into the app store. There is no guarantee that app you downloaded will work at all, and good luck trying to get a refund. It may even be collecting your personal information and using it in a way you're not comfortable with — including your customer's payment information. Do you know if an app you download from the Android Play store are even PCI or EMV compliant?

Screen Issues — Many Android tablets have poor quality screens that are difficult to read at an angle or hard to read in bright lighting conditions. You don't want to have your employees struggling to see the menu when placing tableside orders on the patio or when the windows are letting in natural sunlight.

Many Android-based POS are online-only — This means there is no offline mode and you're entirely dependent on the internet to get anything done. This type of point of sale is basically just a web page. Understand that if you get this type of system, you can't make orders, print receipts, let alone take credit card payments if you lose connection. Your restaurant is down any time the internet has a hiccup.
